Maternal and Child Health

There can be complex health considerations relating to women, pregnancy, children, and infants’ well being, including some considerations that seem out of our control. Many issues impacting women and children, however, can be prevented with consistent, preventive health behaviors or can be addressed in partnership with strong maternal and child health advocates in your community.

From preventive childhood and adult immunizations to assistance obtaining catastrophic illness services, there are steps you can take and resources you can access to ensure good health and wellbeing for yourself or the women and children in your life. Some of these steps include:

Stay up-to-date on recommended vaccinations

Know the dietary needs for yourself and your child

Breastfeed your baby (unless told otherwise by a physician)

Be aware of your child’s development and developmental needs

Have your child screened for blood lead in accordance with pediatric guidelines

Keep poisons like cleaning supplies out of reach of children

Wash your hands often

PHU2 wants to encourage you to stay up-to-date on the public health recommendations and services available for women and children – the Ocean County Health Department may be a great place to start!
